Montserrat: trails between the needles
Montserrat is the classic big day out: a regional train to the foot of the massif, cable car or rack railway up, and a network of signed paths threading between rock towers that exist nowhere else in this form.

Sant Joan
The funicular drops you at the base and the path rises through the pinnacles to a lookout near 1,200 metres. Allow about forty minutes up, and pause on the way to look straight down at the monastery.
Santa Cova
The gentler option, descending through a gap in the rock to the cave chapel where the Black Madonna was found. The walkway back gives you the mountain face head-on.
Camí dels Degotalls
An easy, almost level path below the cliffs, dotted with monuments and springs. It is the right choice for a hot afternoon or for anyone who wants the rock scenery without the cardio.
